Garage Door Safety Sensors Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Those small boxes near the floor on each side of your garage door are safety sensors, required on all openers made after 1993. They shoot an invisible beam across the doorway, and if anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, the door reverses. When they malfunction, your door may refuse to close or reverse for no reason. Here is how to troubleshoot them.

Start by checking the indicator lights. Each sensor has a small LED — one is usually green and the other amber or red. Both should glow steadily when the sensors are aligned and working. A blinking or dark light tells you which side has the problem. Note that sunlight shining directly into a sensor lens can overwhelm the beam and mimic a malfunction.

Clean the lenses first. Dust, cobwebs, and grime block the infrared beam just like a physical obstruction. Wipe both lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Next, check alignment — the sensors must point directly at each other. Loosen the mounting bracket slightly, adjust until both LEDs glow steady, then retighten. Even a small bump from a bike or trash can knocks them out of line.

Inspect the wiring for damage. Follow the thin wires from each sensor back to the opener head, looking for staples driven through the wire, rodent chew marks, or pinched spots. Damaged low-voltage wire is a common cause of intermittent sensor failure. If you find damage and are not comfortable with wiring, our garage door repair team can replace it quickly.

If cleaning and alignment do not help, the sensors themselves may have failed. Replacement sensor kits cost $30 to $60 and are compatible across many opener brands, but they must be wired correctly to work. A faulty logic board in the opener can also mimic sensor problems. Persistent issues after new sensors point to the opener itself, which may need professional diagnosis or an electrician for circuit issues.

Never bypass or disconnect safety sensors to force the door closed. They exist to prevent serious injuries, especially to children and pets. The few minutes spent fixing them properly is always worth it. If you have tried everything here and the door still misbehaves, contact us on WhatsApp for help.

💡 Quick takeaways

  • Both sensor LEDs should glow steady — blinking means misalignment.
  • Clean lenses regularly; dust blocks the infrared beam.
  • Check that direct sunlight is not hitting a sensor lens.
  • Never disconnect safety sensors, even temporarily.
